A benefit of people invariably carrying their smartphones around is the ability to target guests through geo-fencing. Geo-fencing uses a smartphone’s location to determine where a guest is on or off-property and sends them notifications based on where they are. Hotel apps can use geo-fencing to send different messages to guests moving about their properties or to guests who are getting close to the hotel. There are many benefits to the restaurant industry implementing mobile applications and a few of them can be seen by observing a large chains’ app and by pulling a page from Kitchen Confidential.

A quote from Anthony Bourdains book Kitchen Confidential comes to mind when I ponder why the restaurant industry should embrace mobile technology: “Do we really want to travel in hermetically sealed pope mobiles through the rural provinces of France, Mexico and the Far East, eating only in Hard Rock Cafes and McDonalds?”
